How to Read the Scope of a COA

A certificate of analysis is useful only when it is connected to the right material and batch.

How to Read the Scope of a COA

Check the identity of the record

The title of a report is not enough. Review the issuer, material designation, batch identifier, issue date and the specification to which the record refers. A document for a different batch should not silently be substituted.

Distinguish the reported attributes

Identity, content, appearance and purity are different attributes. A reported result should be interpreted with its stated method and acceptance criterion. A single percentage does not answer every quality question.

Keep the complete document

Retain the full authorized document and its revision history in your organization’s records. A screenshot or cropped result can omit scope, method notes or qualifications. If the online register has no match, request a document review rather than assuming the result.

Start with a clear brief
